XP DHCP Set To Automatic, But Not Running, No Connection

Had a customers computer here today running XP SP3 that lost there internet connection,, would not “Acquire AN IP Address”. Ran the usual scans with Spybot, Malwarebytes, Avast, and few others. All together about 100 infections remove. Rescanned nothing else found.

Ran XP Winsock Fix few times, which usually fixes XP’s connections settings due to virus/spyware corruption, damage,, but rebooted and still no internet connection.

Also XP theme was set to Classic, Administrative Tools/Services/Themes was set to automatic,, restarted the Theme service, and was able to set the XP theme back in display properties fine. But on every reboot xp theme would set itself back to classic. Restarted “Theme” service again, back to normal. Every boot up would set itself back to classic…………….

DHCP service (neede for internet connection WAS set to “Automatic” in Services. When I manually restarted the DHCP service, internet connection was re-established fine………………… BUT once again, on every reboot I had no connection unless I manually restarted the “DHCP” service. DHCP service WAS not auto starting itself for some reason. But knew something still was not right, for when I did manually restart these services and had an internet connection,, Internet Explore 8 search pages kept changing on me also.

Found a post elsewhere with the same exact problem,, DHCP and XP Theme service not starting up correctly, where this rootkit remover by Kaspersky fixed it up.

Ran the tool above and it found one rootkit buried down deep, removed and rebooted. XP Theme problem was fixed, AND Internet was back to normal, no problem. Rebooted a few times,,, all good ta go! Did not have to manually restart these 2 services. Thanks Kaspersky for the fix!

Some People Just Do Not Learn……………

Just cannot understand why almost every computer I service has these file sharing programs STILL on there computer. Limewire, Bearshare, Shareaza, BitTorrent. Ares, Kazaa, Morpheous, Emule just to name a few,, with Limewire being the most popular.

Limewire downloads and all the others, are infested with computer viruses and spyware. It’s a virus hell! Other than getting your computer taken down with viruses every month or day,,, it can be very costly if your hit with a copy write lawsuit with Sony or the other “Big Dogs”!

Why people have to fill there computer with music is beyond me. Music is the #1 download, #1 search term. Why do you think these file sharing downloads are loaded with viruses in the first place? To easily and quickly spread these viruses,, do you think???

Just because you might have, or what you think is a active LEGIT Anti Virus/Anti Spyware program protecting you that you are free & clear, or immune to this crap…………… got news for you, you are not! And most run these computers till they stop completely, and then it’s to late. Guess what all your music and your family photos are now gone, lost because your hard drive has crapped out now. And to recover them could cost $200-$1000+++.

I tell these customers every time, every month after I finish removing infections, after I charge them about “safe internet surfing”. And they still have Limewire on there computer, with recent downloads! .99 to download music legally, and possibly much safer is much cheaper than having you computer repaired each month.

This is just my opinion,, do what you continue to do, it’s alright by me!
